ABSTRACT
Special libraries are currently experiencing changes in the new information age due to rapidlyrnchanging media technologies increasing users preferences and expectations. Thesernnecessitate special libraries to adopt marketing approaches in order to reorient themselves.rnThis study therefore investigate the various opportunities of marketing special libraries asrnwell as the challenges that hinder effective marketing of special library services in Nigeria.rnQualitative research methodology was employed for the study. The participants chosen for thisrnstudy were heads librarians in 7 special libraries studied. Interview method was also used asrnthe data collection instrument thematic analysis was used to analyze the data collected usingrncoding system. The findings revealed that the major challenges that hinder effective marketingrnof library services are Lack of Appropriate recognition attention and appreciation of thernlibrary by management of their parent organization lack of electronic and telecommunicationrnresources and services lack professional librarians lack of marketing skills outdatedrninformation resources inadequate fund etc. The opportunities of marketing special librariesrnas reported in the study the librarians are able to understand clients needs plan servicernprovision promote the available services and deliver them efficiently and effectively. Based onrnthe findings in this study it is concludes that despite the challenges faced by the specialrnlibraries the use of marketing serves as the tools for proper provision of information productsrnand services in the libraries it helps in creating awareness of library information products andrnservices for optimum use collaboration and interaction between information providers andrnpatrons. Marketing also provides the avenue through which special libraries promotes therernvaluable benefits to there users.
